Workplace hearing assessments

  • Important facts
    • Hearing loss caused by work is preventable but once your hearing has gone it won't come back.

    • Hearing loss caused by exposure to noise at work continues to be a significant occupational disease. Some 170,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work.

    • Factors that contribute to hearing damage are noise levels and how long people are exposed to the noise, daily or over a number of years.

    • The most efficient and effective way of controlling noise is by technical and organisational means that protect workers at source, e.g. changes in process, reducing vibration (damping) and reducing time spent in noisy areas.

    • Hearing conservation programmes are vital to detect and respond to early signs of damage.

The Hearing Care Centre offers a full range of services aimed at employers that are ensuring they fully comply with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, which was revised in 2008 for those who work in the music and entertainments industry.

If all employers complied it would eventually eliminate occupational noise-induced hearing loss! Health & Safety Executive (HSE) aims that by 2030 there should be no new cases of noise-induced hearing loss through noise at work.

We can undertake workplace visits to enable us to see exactly what tasks are being undertaken and the working environment of individual employees. We can liaise directly with managers and supervisors and participate in Health and Safety meetings enabling us to understand the whole picture.

Alternatively we can provide a screening service, whereby employees working in noisy environments will receive a hearing assessment and then monitored annually or bianually, to ensure that their hearing levels have not altered.
