Questions and Answers

What causes hearing loss?

The majority of hearing losses are the result of ageing. Other possible causes are: prolonged exposure to loud noises, hereditary factors, physical injury to the ear, certain illnesses and ototoxic medications.

The most common form of hearing loss is called 'nerve deafness'.

This comes about when the cochlea (inner ear) and auditory nerves cannot properly transmit their signals to the brain.

How common is hearing loss?

One in seven British people currently have some degree of hearing loss. For those aged 65 or older, the ratio is almost one in three.

What should I do if I have a hearing loss?

The first step should be a professional hearing examination conducted by a qualified hearing aid audiologist.

This will determine the level and type of hearing loss. With today's modern technology many hearing losses can be successfully corrected with hearing aids.

However, only about a quarter of those people who could benefit from the use of hearing aids, actually do so.

Can I get my money back?

All our hearing instruments are fitted with a minimum 30 day money back trial period and a 2 year guarantee.

What about the difficulties I have heard about hearing aids?

It is true that there are several issues that are sometimes mentioned by hearing aid users.

Here are two of the most common:

'My own voice sounds strange'
Hearing aids amplify some or all sounds. This includes the sound of your own voice. Your voice may sound different partly because you hear more of the tones it contains and because it is being amplified by the hearing aids.

'I have a problem with whistling sounds or feedback'
There are several common causes of this problem, all of which are easily solved eg:

Problem: Wax in the ear canal
When wax blocks the ear canal, the sound delivered by the hearing aid is unable to travel into the ear. The sound hits the wall of wax and is forced back out of the ear. This is picked up by the hearing aid and causes a high-pitched, constant whistle.
Action: the wax needs to be removed; use EAROL ™  olive oil spray to soften and then see your GP/nurse for advice.

Problem: Poorly fitting ear mould
If you lose or gain weight, you may find the ear mould becomes uncomfortable or loose.
Action: visit your hearing aid audiologist for a new ear mould impression and have the ear mould remade.

Problem: Incorrectly fitted ear mould
A common fault when inserting the ear mould, to leave the top of the mould or helix, sticking out of the ear. Sometimes being shown how to do it properly can rectify this. However, some people still find it difficult.
Action: visit your hearing aid audiologist for guidance. He or she may modify the mould to make it easier for you to insert it.

Will my hearing aids amplify loud sounds and damage my hearing further?

Your hearing aids will be pre-set to a safe level of maximum amplification. However, keep in mind that you may have to re-accustom yourself to loud startling sounds as they are amplified by your hearing aids.

Two of my friends wear hearing aids that look the same, but each friend paid a different amount. They came from the same hearing aid audiologist. Why are the prices different?

Hearing aid shells look alike, but it's the circuit inside that you are paying for. 95% of hearing aids today are digital but 'digital' comes in a huge range of technology levels from a more basic, single channel hearing aid to a top of the range 24+ channel product.

To use a car as an example: within each body style the consumer has a choice of 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder engines, a choice of radios, interiors and wheel covers. So although the outside of two same model cars may look alike, they can have completely different prices. The clarity of a hearing aid is influenced by the complexity of the circuitry.

How much should I expect to pay for a hearing aid?

The cost of a hearing aid is determined by the following factors:

  • Whether it has digital or analogue sound processing.
  • Style of aid - Custom made aids involve considerably more labour and will therefore cost more.
  • How many functions the aid has - volume control, telecoil, multiple listening programs, remote control and directional microphones are just some of the options available.
  • Professional charges - highly sophisticated digital hearing aids may require longer fitting times and sometimes further 'fine tuning' visits.

That said, we have hearing aids from as little as £495.

Just call or e-mail us for an appointment or more information.

What is the best make of hearing aid?

There are over 20+ major hearing aid manufacturers, each producing exceptional quality products. Which brand is right for you is determined by the results of your audiogram, your lifestyle, your cosmetic requirements and your dexterity. The hearing aid audiologist will select the make only after deciding which circuit best suits your requirements.

How does hearing loss affect individuals?

While hearing loss is unique, most people share common results from their loss. They often feel isolated from their surroundings and it is often more difficult to meet new people or face new surroundings. They frequently complain of appearing incompetent and feeling insecure.
